Slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888. Yet, 22 years later, black sailors working for the Brazilian navy were still treated as before: miserable wages, bad food, and transgressions punished with the whip. One day these men decided enough was enough.
Based on the true story of the so-called “Revolt of the Whip”, and on the song written 50 years later in honor of the black mutineers – a song then censored by the military dictatorship – this video mixes history and fantasy, in a celebration of those brave sailors.
