Disserta\u00e7\u00e3o (Mestrado em Teoria e Pr\u00e1tica do Teatro) &#8211; Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo, 2009.<\/p><p><strong>Palavras-chave:<\/strong> Car\u00e1ter, Figura, Grotesco, M\u00e1scara, Modernismo, Tipo.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Resumo:<\/strong> \u00a0trabalho apresenta algumas das iniciativas para a retomada da m\u00e1scara no teatro moderno. No amplo quadro da primeira metade do s\u00e9culo XX, escolhemos quatro principais artistas que abordaram esse objeto: Gordon Craig, Meyerhold, Jacques Copeau e Jacques Lecoq. Nestes a m\u00e1scara n\u00e3o \u00e9 apenas mais um elemento colocado em cena, mas tamb\u00e9m um princ\u00edpio organizador da teatralidade que almejam. Atrav\u00e9s de seus trabalhos analisamos algumas caracter\u00edsticas da m\u00e1scara que podem ser reelaboradas no teatro contempor\u00e2neo. Em Gordon Craig, abordamos as primeiras proposi\u00e7\u00f5es dentro do teatro simbolista, al\u00e9m do panorama da m\u00e1scara no in\u00edcio do s\u00e9culo XX; atrav\u00e9s de Meyerhold, pudemos tra\u00e7ar os elementos grotescos contidos na m\u00e1scara; com Jacques Copeau, questionamos os conceitos de car\u00e1ter e de tipo e, atrav\u00e9s da pedagogia de Jacques Lecoq, pudemos analisar o trabalho da m\u00e1scara como signo representativo.
