Particularmente, esta tese examina o modo como ele, a partir do Recife, distante dos dois principais centros de produ\u00e7\u00e3o teatral do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro e S\u00e3o Paulo, assumiu uma posi\u00e7\u00e3o ativa no processo de moderniza\u00e7\u00e3o do teatro nacional, ocorrido ao longo do s\u00e9culo XX, mais claramente desde os \u00faltimos anos da d\u00e9cada de 1930.
